Agapia monastery – painted by Nicolae Grigorescu

Though only 20 years old when he began  painting monastery ceiling , the painter Nicolae Grigorescu made to Agapia a work of great value among the painted monasteries in Bucovina, combining Byzantine tradition in neoclassical style and Romanian folk art. The icons of the iconostasis, wall paintings and compositions are painted in a realistic manner, in which reality is rendered with great precision and artistic talent. Some icons with great prophets stands youthful and graceful image of the prophet Daniel, the painter captures their image of the youth, thus leaving us – anonymous portrait. To visit the monastery Agapia can organize a tour for 3-4 days, during which you can visit the other monasteries with painted exterior walls  in Moldova – Bucovina :  Voroneţ, Humor, Arbore, Văratec, Dragomirna, Borzesti, Sucevita and more … Due to their uniqueness and artistic value , monasteries were added to the list of UNESCO International Cultural Heritage  in 1993. Indeed , no other place on earth where there is such a group of churches , with such high quality exterior frescoes .
