In 2026 the famous road Transfagarasan was open a bit late 2nd week of June, I rented a car with driver for a family who came to Romania for the first time, and they specifically asked to see the bears on Transfagarasan and Lake Balea of course. We left Bucharest at 8am and arrived at Lake Vidraru at 11am, after taking a few pictures we continued on our way to Balea Lake.
All the way there and back we saw 15 bears, many of them young. At the Balea cabin the atmosphere was quiet, not many tourists, very good service. My group felt good, especially since they saw the bears in their habitat, not in cages.
