Transfagarasan highway- South side
Starting July 1, every year Transfagarasan highway linking Transylvania and Wallachia, crossing the highest mountain range in Romania – Mountains Fagaras at Balea waterfall . Transfagarasan highway start from Arefu (Arges c-ty ), DN7C at kilometer 61 and ends in the village Cartisoara (Sibiu c-ty ), at the junction with DN1. It has about 90 kilometers long and two lanes. It’s an uphill road with many switchbacks. What you’ll see : Vlad the Impaler ” Dracula “eagle nest – Poenari ( summer 2022-closed for renovation !!! ) , water dam and lake – Vidraru, Valea cu Pesti Hotel, Cumpana cottage , Capra cottage, tunnel , Balea cottage, Paltinu cottage, Balea lake formed in a glacial cirque, Hotel of Ice – Balea Lac, igloo, church of ice ( in winter season ). From hotel Balea waterfall to Balea cottage there is a cable running at each 12 min. . Located at 2,000 meters, the lake has an area of over 360 square meters, and the deepest place reaching 11 meters . Since 1932 the lake and about 200 acres around it were declared – Scientific Reservation . Nearby was built in 2006,the first Ice Hotel in Eastern Europe.
Here is the starting point for several hiking trails , affordable distance : to Negoiu Peak ~ 4 hrs, to Hunting Buteanu Peak~ 4 hrs…
Traffic is prohibited between the hours 21:00 to 7:00 .Road is closed at November 1st .
To get there, there are two different roads in the summer ( 240 km) and winter season ( 300 Km ) .
